The project developed for Biomerieux, which was later selected as the winner of an ideas competition, stems from a thorough understanding of the site, including the landscape surrounding the area and the whole life inside the laboratories and research facilities of the Company, which is committed to conducting research and development with the aim of offering solutions for the medical sector in order to improve care and global public health and contribute to the medicine of the future. As the R&D sector grew, the existing spaces at the Tuscan plant needed to expand accordingly so as to host more employees and boost production.
The owners’ request was to have a new building with offices and laboratories, which had to be modern and efficient, and at the forefront in terms of energy. In fact, BioMerieux stands out for its care for the environmental component in all of its facilities, with references to the local architectural traditions and a marked emphasis on the green component.
The new project volume was modeled in harmony with the recognized common feature of the buildings of the valley floor, i.e. following the contour of the gabled roofs.
Two large red industrial buildings with a flat-roofed portion acting as their junction make up the new building, whose more contemporary concept is enhanced by the absence of eaves overhangs and sharply defined edges. What was also pursued was an architectural dialogue with the other body existing in the area, i.e. a manufacturing building overlooking Via Chiantigiana, consisting of 3 levels above ground, painted in a brick-red color.
The green features envisaged in the project also reach out into the building itself through a loggia that will be developed to amplify the outdoor space of the canteen. During the warm season, it will eventually allow for a pleasant lunchtime break in the open air. The upper floors are also designed with spacious terraces bordered with large containers where flowers and plants can be planted, so that all occupants of the building will be able to enjoy an outdoor space for socializing.
The project is intended to result in an architectural artifact that belongs to the place, replicating the characteristics of the existing buildings and greenery albeit using a contemporary language. The expansion of Biomerieux is meant to reflect all of the company’s characteristics of excellence in research and development, through a cutting-edge architecture, strongly oriented to the future but with an eye to the local tradition.
